Robert Gordon University

How have you used the What Matters to You approach?

On What Matters to You? (WMTY) Day 2023 Robert Gordon University stage 1 nursing students carried out a survey.  They spoke to over 1000 people, friends, family and people on the street to ask them this important question:

“When engaging with healthcare services, what matters to you most?”

The students were able to really reflect on the overwhelming reply from the general public that they wanted to be listened to and heard.  They were empowered to find that most of what the respondents wanted was something that they could actually give e.g. compassion, respect and dignity, good listening and communication skills, clear communication, approachability and professionalism.  They reflected that they had been so focused on clinical skills they had not really thought about these ‘soft skills’ and how important they were to most people.

What is the key learning you would share with others?

“People want to be listened to and HEARD.”
